Kate Hudson, Matt Bellamy

Things haven't been smooth sailing for Kate Hudson and Matthew Bellamy, but they're not giving up.

After nearly a month of are-they-or-aren't-they, E! News has learned that the actress and her fiancé are still together and doing whatever necessary to make their relationship work.

"Kate and Matt spent several weeks apart, and the time away was good for them as they've been trying to figure things out," a source tells E! News. "They didn't want to end their relationship, so they took a step back for awhile to let things cool off."

Additionally, the source tells us, "They had been in a rough patch and things weren't going well. They've been to counseling and decided they both would like to stay together for now. Kate has never been traditional and she doesn't know exactly what their future looks like.

"She needed time to go out with her friends and let loose and have fun. Matt went to Europe for a while, and now that's he's back, they are slowly spending more time together. They are both open-minded and will see what happens. They aren't rushing to make any decisions right now."

After spending some time apart, the pair was seen out and about with a friend in Los Angeles on Friday. The couple, who are parents to 2-year-old son Bingham, have been engaged since 2011, but the actress has fueled reports that she's on the outs with the rocker after stepping out numerous times without her engagement ring

However, last month a source reassured E! News that they were just going through some tough times like any couple.

"They are OK," the insider said. "They go through their ups and downs like every other couple. It's true that occasionally they don't spend as much time together as they would like—work pulls them apart from time to time. But they are working on strengthening their relationship."
