Bob Costas, Meredith Vieira

Bob Costas is still battling a pesky eye infection and Matt Lauer has been pulling double duty in Sochi.

After three days of anchoring Today and filling in on primetime for the recovering NBC sportscaster, Lauer is taking a well-deserved night off on Friday.

Meredith Vieirais coming out of the "bullpen" (Costas told Lauer this on Tuesday) and will make history by becoming the first woman to ever anchor NBC's primetime coverage solo, per NBC.

"It's an honor to fill in for him,'' Vieira said on Today. "You think about the Olympics, and you think the athletes and then Bob Costas."

Vieira joked with that she is dealing with an eye problem of her own.

"It's so funny, I woke up this morning and I was feeling fine, and now my eyes are killing me,'' she revealed. "I watched you guys (Matt and Al Roker) attempt the luge. I think I'm going blind. And I'm really worried because I have to go prime time tonight."

Lauer had nothing but words of support for his former co-anchor.

"Meredith's fantastic, she'll be great, she really will, and I know she's going to have a blast," Lauer said. "It's fun!"

But the veteran anchor, understandably so, might not be watching Vieira make her debut.

"Sleep, sleep, sleep, that's my night tonight," a tired Lauer said.

As for Costas, he said several days ago that he doesn't "feel that bad" but his eyes are so blurry, watery and very sensitive to light. The infection also began in his left eye and has since spread to his right eye.

According to NBC, Tuesday night was the first time since 1998 that their Olympics coverage had been anchored by anyone other than Costas.

Here's to hoping Costas, and his hipster glasses, make their return soon. And good luck, Meredith!
