And the most hipster mystery ever has been solved!
The owner of Dumb Starbucks, the Los Feliz, Calif. "parody coffee shop" (apparently it's a thing!) that took social media by storm this weekend, has revealed himself: it's Comedy Central's Nathan Fielder! The host of Nathan for You, which is currently filming its second season, tweeted a link to a Youtube video on Monday, which acts as a commercial for the coffee shop.
"Many of you know me as a comedian, but this is not bit or joke," he explains. "This is a real business I plan to get rich from."
As the "president' of Dumb Starbucks, Fielder hosted a press conference outside of the Hillhurst Ave. location on Monday at 4 p.m., revealing the store, which serves free coffee and pastries purchased from nearby supermarkets, would be open until Friday. Oh, and he's planning on expanding to New York City, so Brooklyn hipsters, prepare to consume some average coffee.
"We'll see how it goes in Brooklyn," Fielder said. "This has been overwhelming."
While Starbucks has said they are "evaluating" their next step, Fielder isn't too concerned about any legal action (Dumb Starbucks is said to be protected because it's a work of parody art). "They're smart in not pursuing a case they know they can't win," he explained. "If they keep the pressure up, they do risk losing me as a customer."
On his Comedy Central docu-reality series, Fielder plays a version of himself who assists struggling small businesses to make it in a competitive market. Clearly, he knows what he's doing as Dumb Starbucks had curious costumers waiting hours in line and dominated Twitter, Instagram and other social media outlets.
So does Comedy Central know what their star is up to? "Oh, now they do," Fielder said at the press conference.
Dumb Starbucks' Twitter account currently has almost 10,000 followers.
