Snowboarder Sage Kotsenburg took home the honor after he wowed judges in the slopestyle competition Saturday, particularly when he performed a "1620 Japan" at the end--four-and-a-half revolutions while grabbing the board in front and arching his back, according to the New York Times.
A trick he told the paper he "had never, ever tried" before in his life.
When the competition began, Kotsenburg wasn't exactly sure what tricks he was going to perform, and since he hadn't won a snowboarding competition since he was 11 (before qualifying for the Winter Olympics), he wasn't expecting anything big.
"I just kind of make things up," the 20-year-old Park City, Utah, native told the paper. "Coming here and winning, I can't even describe the feeling."
Kotsenburg's teammate Shaun White famously bowed out of this year's Sochi slopestyle competition, after admitting his concerns about getting injured due to the size and danger of the course.
"After much deliberation with my team, I have made the decision to focus solely on trying to bring home the third straight gold medal in halfpipe for Team USA," the 27-year-old snowboarder told NBC's Today in a statement. "The difficult decision to forego slopestyle is not one I take lightly as I know how much effort everyone has put into holding the slopestyle event for the first time in Olympic history, a history I had planned on being a part being a part of."
The two-time Olympic Gold medalist has been focusing his attention on the men's halfpipe instead, which will make him the first American man to win three Olympic gold medals in a single event, if he wins the competition.
