Liam Payne, Twitter

Liam Payne never intended to cause such a hubbub online.

The One Direction member sent his fan base into a tizzy over the weekend when a Twitter picture showed him standing on the edge of a sky-high balcony. The "Story of My Life" singer addressed the incident and apologized for his actions via the same social networking site on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The photo was reportedly published by one of Payne's pals and has since been deleted.

"You may have seen a photo of me today taken on top of a building. I regret being there and having a photo taken," Payne, 20, tweeted. "It was a stupid and irresponsible thing to do. I am sorry, and do not endorse any fans trying to repeat this, as it is extremely dangerous."

That same night, Payne attended 1D boy-bander Zayn Malik's 21st birthday party.

Hours before Payne cleared up the balcony controversy on Jan. 14, he tweeted about his lack of privacy and asked fans to respect his boundaries. "I know my friends have tweeted a lot of pictures of my house the past few days but can people please stop coming and waiting outside?" he pleaded.

The pop star continued, "I'd just like to be able to walk outside as everyone does and enjoy time with my friends, not feel bad for not wanting to take a picture. Sorry if I've been rude to anyone but I've come to realise if I take one picture more people keep coming everyday xxx hope everyone's good."

One Direction is taking some time off before they begin rehearsals for their 2014 summer concert tour.
