Fans of Anna Paquin's mutant X-Men superhero character might be disappointed to learn that she will not be seen in the upcoming movie.

Director Bryan Singer confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the scene featuring the True Blood starlet has been cut from the final film. Paquin came back to the fantasy flick to reprise her role as Marie and Marie's superhero alter ego, Rogue.

The rescue sequence, which was shot early in the film's production, featured Paquin as well as Magneto (Ian McKellen), Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore). This was the only scene in the highly anticipated film with the Oscar winner.

"Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous," Singer told the magazine. "It's a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go."

"Even though she's in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won't appear in it," Singer said of Paquin.

Singer stressed that the cut had nothing to do with the 31-year-old's performance.

"She did a fantastic job," Singer said. "She was awesome in the sequence. She's a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat."

Singer added that Paquin "understood" and was "very professional" when she heard the news.

X-Men: Days of Future Past combines the casts of the original X-Men trilogy with the cast of 2011′s First Class.

The action-adventure flick is due in theaters on May 23, 2014.
