It's no secret that maintaining a happy marriage can be tough at times, and it can be even harder if a couple is in the spotlight. But Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher seem to have found the secret to wedded bliss.

The country crooner and former American Idol winner graces the cover of Ladies Home Journal in which she opens up about her marriage to the hunky professional hockey player and reveals how the twosome keep the spark in their relationship, despite having to spend time apart for work.

"Communication, trust, and Skype are key," the 30-year-old singer, who has been happily married since July 2010, tells the mag.

The "Blown Away" beauty also reveals that she and her athletic hubby like to stay fit together, but, understandably so, don't share the same workout routine.

"My husband and I exercise at the same time, but his workouts are a lot different than mine," she shares. "I don't want to look like a hockey player and he doesn't want to look like a country singer."

Makes sense! As for what makes the songstress feel at home?

"My dogs—they're like my kids," the self-professed animal lover admits.

Underwood's love for animals also led her to adopt a vegan diet at an early age, but Mike Fisher's missus insists she knows how to alter her diet so she can still indulge in seemingly forbidden food.

"I call myself a practical vegan," she reveals. "I like taking things that are naughty—like pizza and making them healthy."

The "Before He Cheats" singer also said she's "so excited" to play Maria in the upcoming NBC live special of The Sound of Music (which also stars Stephen Moyer as Captain Von Trapp) set to air this Thursday at 8 p.m.

But surprisingly enough, the blond beauty, who won the fourth season of American Idol in 2005, revealed that she has performance anxiety...when it comes to small crowd.

"I'm really shy!" Carrie shared. "I can perform in front of a big arena, but put me in a smaller setting like a baby shower or a birthday party and that's when I get nervous."

Who knew?!
