Sam Champion Leaving Good Morning America for The Weather Channel

Popular meteorologist's last day on the show will be Dec. 4

Things are certainly looking sunny for Sam Champion.

It was announced on Monday that the Good Morning America weather anchor is leaving the popular a.m. show and heading to The Weather Channel.

In a statement released by ABC News president Ben Sherwood, Champion "will become the on-air face of the network, appearing as a host and serving as managing editor."

Sherwood added, "For 25 years, Sam has been a vital member of the ABC News family—joining powerhouse station WABC in 1988 and GMA in 2006. Over the years at GMA, Sam has broadcast more than 1,800 weather forecasts."

"Only an amazing opportunity like this at @weatherchannel cld take me away from my @ABC family of 25 yrs and @GMA #blessedlife," Champion tweeted following the announcement.

According to Sherwood, meteorologist Ginger Zee, who has worked with Champion over the last few years, will take over his weather responsibilities at GMA and across ABC News.

Champion's last day on GMA will be Wednesday, Dec. 4.
