It can't be easy being Harry Styles at times, what with the hordes of fans following him everywhere he goes and the media all over him...

Or maybe we're projecting.

Crediting his mum with helping him keep his head firmly in place atop his shoulders, the British heartthrob told E! News' Jason Kennedy in an exclusive sit-down—the latest in our series of interviews with the individual members of One Direction—that he never wants to be the jerk in the room.

After Jason complimented him on his gentlemanly ways, Harry explained that he doesn't "think it's that hard" to shake people's hands and show respect, even when the moment is all about him—as it so often is!

Asked how he stays grounded when it comes to fame, Harry said, "I've got a really good family, I've got great friends around me.

"I think it's not that hard, if you can take a step back from it and kinda see [fame] for what it is, then you don't start beliving that this is just life," the 19-year-old said, waving his hands to represent the nature of celebrity.

"I dunno," Harry admitted (sounding so much like a young Paul McCartney), when asked whom he calls upon when the pressures of fame get overwhelming. "You just have to enjoy it because eventually there's going to be a day when, you know, nobody wants to speak to you and then you go [he looked to the side, smiling], 'Hey, I'm here!'"

Worldwide fame is what he's dealing with though, so that must make it difficult to differentiate between which women are interested in him and which just like him because he's in One Direction. Right?

"I think you just know," Harry shrugged. "It's one of them things where if you meet someone who likes you just because it's you and not because, you know, you have stuff."

Of course, it probably helps when the other person is Taylor SwiftCara Delevingne or someone else who understands the spotlight.

But back to business: Harry cowrote some of the songs on the group's latest album, Midnight Memories, which came out today.

"When you're writing songs, it's impossible to not draw on personal experiences, whether it be, you know, traveling or girls or anything," he admitted.

"That's the amazing thing about music, there's a song for every emotion. Can you imagine a world with no music? It would suck."

"And," Harry added, "I'd still be a baker."

And surely his pastries would be the best of the bunch.
