Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have successfully created a fashion empire, and now, the stunning sisters are opening up about their style roots.

And surprisingly enough, the high-fashion twins, who grace the cover of Net-a-Porter's The Edit magazine's latest issue, say they first began dipping their toes into the fashion world on the set of the hit sitcom Full House, on which they first appeared at just 9 months old.

"[On Full House] we would be in six-hour fittings three times a week, because we had to wear 12 different outfits," Ashley said (the sisters both played the role of Michelle Tanner from 1987 to 1995).

Added Mary-Kate: "We were designing clothes for ourselves as we were so petite. So I think that is when we became obsessed with fit, and now the obsession has become a profession."

A highly successful profession, as the ladies have cofounded the luxury fashion brands The Row and Elizabeth and James, as well as the more affordable lines Olsenboye and StyleMint.

And last year, the darling designers won the highly coveted 2012 Womenswear Designers of the Year award at the CFDA Awards for their work on The Row, which is currently the sisters' sole focus.

"We're really focused on The Row at the moment," Mary-Kate shared.

The 27-year-old twins, who have been famous for almost three decades, also opened up about their lives in NYC and said they don't find the shutterbugs too troublesome.

"There is a threshold in New York, and once you pass that and are considered a New Yorker, they leave you alone," Ashley admitted of the pesky paps. "But we're at the office every day, then home or out for dinner, so there aren't the opportunities for them to take pictures. For the most part you try and avoid it…[I do], at least."

But while the notoriously private pair may try to stay out of the public eye, they note that they can't remember a time in their lives when they didn't have to deal with fame.

"We were 9 months old when we started, so fame has always been part of our lives," Ashley explained. "There wasn't any weirdness where we decided that we wanted to be famous. Then as we got older, we were very fortunate that we could hire and work with amazing people who want to protect us."

Smart, stylish and successful—we simply adore these sisters.
