Box Office: Gravity Rules the Weekend, Captain Phillips Sails to No.2

George Clooney & Sandra Bullock's sci-fi drama is No. 1 for second weekend

Gravity continued to soar at the box office this weekend, raking in $44.3 million and staying in the No.1 spot for the second weekend in a row.

The sci-fi drama was so successful in its first weekend, it set a record for being the top October opening, earning $55.6 million. The record was previously held by Paranormal Activity 3, which raked in $52.6 million in its debut.

George Clooney and Sandra Bullock portray astronauts who become stranded in the blackness of space after a satellite crashes into their shuttle during a space walk.

Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks, sailed to the No.2 spot with $26 million. The high-seas drama tells the real-life story of Capt. Richard Phillips, who was taken hostage when Somali pirates hijacked his ship, the MV Maersk Alabama, and later rescued by Navy SEAL snipers.

The animated comedy Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 continued to fare well with moviegoers, landing at No.3 with $14.2 million.

Machete Kills, in its opening weekend, made $3.7 million and took the No.4 spot.
