It's time for a crash course in teen TV history!

The Vampire Diaries returns for its fifth season on Thursday, Oct. 3, and it's hard to believe that Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline (Candice Accola) will be heading off to Whitmore College. It seems like just yesterday the girls were wearing their Mystic Falls High School cheerleading uniforms and were, well, alive. My, how our newbie vamps have grown!

But the transition from high school to college is often a perilous one for teen dramas, so we're looking back at how ten popular series handled the move. And yes, their moves will be graded!

While some series flourished when they packed up their cars and headed off to university (Here's looking at you, Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls!), more than a handful of shows had a tough time keeping their marks up. Sorry, Dawson's Creek and Gossip Girl!

Of course, a few series kept a foot in both doors, also focusing on a younger group of characters still in high school, such as Glee and Degrassi. And One Tree Hill just decided to skip college altogether!

But which shows received a passing grade in our transition class? And which series should've studied harder? Take a peek through our new gallery to find out!
