Start spreading the news—Liza Minnelli can't wait to see Michelle Williams playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret when she makes her Broadway debut next year in a revival of the legendary musical.

It was announced earlier this week that the Brokeback Mountain star will play opposite Minnelli's good friend Alan Cumming as Emcee (he earned a Tony for the same role in a 1998 revival).

"Michelle is a wonderful actress and I love Alan Cumming," Minnelli exclusively tells me. "I'm excited to see what they will do with the show and am sure it will be great!"

Minnelli won an Oscar for her now-iconic portrayal of Sally in Bob Fosse's 1972 movie adaptation.

Previews of Williams' 24-week limited engagement for the Roundabout Theatre Company kick off March 21 at the Kit Kat Klub at Studio 54. Opening night is set for April 24.

Sam Mendes, who directed the 1998 revival, returns as director as does Rob Marshall as choreographer.

"I'm delighted to be stepping back into the Kit Kat Klub one more time, and to be having the opportunity to re-explore and re-discover this extraordinary musical alongside two equally extraordinary performers," Mendes said in a statement earlier this week.

Marshall said, "Michelle Williams is an actress of rare gifts and she will make an astonishing Sally Bowles."

Williams proved she could belt out a tune when she earned an Oscar nomination for her work as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn.
