It goes without saying that there was much to take in at last night's MTV Video Music Awards from the incredible music performances to the jaw-dropping fashion ensembles.

One category that didn't disappoint was the gorgeous celebrity makeup seen on some of our favorite stars.

Shailene Woodley looked sophisticated and sexy in a dramatic beauty look that felt edgy and effortless at the same time.

We tapped the Divergent star's makeup artist Gloria Noto, who exclusively used budget-friendly products by NP Set and Pixi (all available at Target—and under $25 each!) on the star to learn more about the inspiration and the step-by-step process.

"I wanted to create a statement makeup look, focusing on the eyes. I chose to create modern, smoky, elongated cat eyes with a wet, edgy, gunmetal look," Noto commented, adding that Woodley's beaded skirt inspired her creative vision.

Here's how she did it:

1. Apply the Pixi Lid Last Shadow Pen in Mocha Mauve  over entire eyelids and blend. Rim the entire eye with Pixi Lid Last Shadow Pen in Graphite Glint and then blend both shades together.

2. Apply the matte taupe shade in the Pixi Shade Quartette in Shades of Taupe, blending out the edges of the eye and up the shade to the brow.

3. Then use the two darker metallic shades on the eyelids for an edgy, wet look. Use the light shade in the palette to add definition to the cheek bones, and the darkest shade in the NP Set Eye Palette in Atlanta around the outer eyelid.

4. Next, line inner water line and upper lash line with Pixi Lid and Line in Smoky Black.

5. Use the white and peach shades from the Pixi Eye Bright Kit to highlight the cheekbones and around the mouth. This helps pull the mouth forward, making the lips appear larger.

6. Then, layer NP Set Pasarella Mascara in Black on the top and bottom lashes for volume, and apply the matte gray shade in the Pixi Shade Quartette in Shades of Taupe on her temples to further contour the face and bring out the eyes.

7. To round out the look, use Pixi Beauty Bronzer + Kabuki Brush in Summertime along the forehead and jaw line to add warmth to the face.

8. Finally, highlight inner eyes with Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen in Oyster Glow for added sparkle.
