Julianne Hough

We can't figure out why Julianne Hough would show up to a red carpet event looking like she's auditioning for an ‘80s yuppie role. With that spikey hair and pale pink lip gloss, we're thinking Ms. Hough just finished watching a Michael J. Fox movie marathon.

We wish her over-contoured cheeks and overall orange hue were part of the costume, but unfortunately we think the Paradise starlet was just another victim of an over-zealous makeup artist.

This look is not all bad 80swe do love the eye makeup. The soft smoky brown eye shadow makes her blue eyes sparkle and is a welcome alternative to a heavy smoked eye.  The eyebrows are a bit over-penciled though. We would have liked to see a more natural texture to her brows.

Beauty Bailout: Julianne needs to put away the hair mousse and start looking her age (and the current decade).  She is such a natural beauty and this spikey mess takes away from those All-American good looks.

Since Julianne cut her hair into a bob, our favorite look has been when she slicked back her hair and let those eyes and cheekbones shine.  All she needs to do to revive this flattering look is apply a flexible styling cream like Rusk Wired Flexible Styling Crème, part her hair on the side and comb it back. Voila! Instant glamour!

As for the makeup, we wouldn't dare touch those sultry eyes.  But, we would cut back on the eyebrow pencil and brush those brows upwards to give them a more natural texture.

This tiny dancer also needs to throw out her self-tanner pronto.  While we applaud her choice not to lay in the sun to get a little glow, the self-tanner she is using makes her look more like an oompa-loompa than a sun-kissed goddess.

Julianne also needs to shake her makeup artist's shoulders and demand to know why she used a bronzer that is five shades too dark to contour this lovely face.  Her makeup artist should have applied a more natural-looking bronzer like Orlane Bronzed Pressed Powder Soleil in Cuivre 02 underneath her cheekbones and along her jawline (like a V-shape).   Then she should have taken the bronzer brush and lightly (key word being lightly) dusted bronzer where the sun naturally hits her face (forehead, nose, chin, etc.).

Rather than seeing the harsh lines of her blush and bronzer, we would have liked to see Julianne in a gel blush like Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelée  in Pink Escape which would have added a little dimension and made her cheeks look naturally flushed. If you're trying this at home, apply the gel blush with your finger, starting by tapping the blush onto the apples of your cheeks. Then use your finger to blend the blush into the apples of your cheeks, pulling upwards towards your temples for a lifting effect.

We would also definitely ask Julianne to also banish that pale pink lip gloss to the beauty graveyard.  Not only is this gloss from the wrong decade, but it actually makes her lips look thinner. We wish Julianne had opted for a fun pinky coral like Maybelline ColorSensational Vivids in Shocking Coral to bring out the blue in her eyes and make this look more summer-centric.

We hope that Julianne will heed our advice and get rid of this dated look.  Let's face it, if she's set on channeling the ‘80s we would much rather see her use Debbie Harry as a style icon than Melanie Griffith in Working Girl.
