Thirty-one years after Princess Diana debuted Prince William on the steps of London's St. Mary's Hospital dressed in a pretty polka-dot dress, Kate Middleton has given the world its first peek at the royal baby—on the very same steps, no less!—in a dress decorated with the same classic pattern.
Looking impossibly radiant for someone who just gave birth the previous day, the Duchess of Cambridge wore cornflower blue crêpe de chine dress by British designer Jenny Packham, as she cradled her newborn baby boy. She paired her feminine frock, which hit just above her knees, with simple yet elegant nude L.K. Bennett wedges and, of course, her hard-to-miss engagement ring!
It's no surprise the new-mother chose a British designer for the momentous occasion, as she has a history of sporting U.K. labels for the major moments in her life. She reached for an Issa London dress when announcing her engagement to Prince William—subsequently causing the style to sell out!—and stunned in a lovely long-sleeved confection created by Alexander McQueen's Sarah Burton on her wedding day.
Prince William's wife's polka dot dress was a little more form-fitting (we could make out her post-baby bump in the Packham dress) than the green polka-dot shift dress Princess Diana wore all those years ago. Diana also chose lower hemline than Kate, opting for a length that hit mid-calf and hovered loosely over her eye-catching, bow-adorned red shoes.
Both new mothers were also accompanied by their husbands for the historic royal baby debuts. Prince William seems to have coordinated his outfit with his wife's, choosing a light blue striped oxford shirt that matched Middleton's dress perfectly. The new father, who paired his outfit with black slacks, was decidedly more casual than his father, Prince Charles, who wore a dark pinstripe suit and striped tie back in 1982 to present William to the world.
But despite the difference in their hubby's style and their own choice in dress silhouettes and accessories, one thing is for sure: both royals made for stunning new moms!
