Randy Travis is fighting for his life.

The country singer was hospitalized yesterday in Texas with complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy, according to his publicist.

No other details were forthcoming, other than that his condition is listed as critical.

Cardiomyopathy translates to measurable deterioration of the heart muscle caused by whatever reason. Symptoms include shortness of breath and swelling of the legs, and the condition often leads to heart failure.

Travis, 54, has a history of alcohol-related run-ins with the law over the years. In January, he pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated stemming from an arrest last August when authorities found him naked in his vehicle after he ran off the road.

The Grammy winner's attorney told People back in December that his client had sobered up and was "doing great."

"He's given up drinking alcohol. He's drinking eight glasses of water a day or more. He's on a strict exercise regimen..He's in the best shape he's ever been in in his life."

Travis recently shared in a CMT Music Award nomination with the Avett Brothers for Collaborative Video of the Year for "Three Wooden Crosses."
