It's a sad day for Hilary Duff.

The actress revealed that her beloved pet pooch Lola had passed away and took to Twitter to make the announcement to friends and fans, saying, "RIP my beautiful Lola girl my heart is broken :( say a prayer for my little angel."

Duff posted the message with an adorable photo of her snuggling the pup. She also thanked everyone for their thoughts and prayers during the difficult time.

"Guys! Thank you all for your well wishes for my beautiful Lola it really means so much when you are hurting to know so many people care. [heart] u all"

Duff's Chihuahua has had a history of health problems.

In September 2011 Lola went to the emergency animal hospital for an eye infection. The 8-year-old dog also suffered from seizures in 2012 and was hospitalized with Duff by her side.

The mother of one tweeted at the time, "Update! Lola was having terrible seizures. She had a shunt put in her scull2drain fluid off her brain & now she is doing great."

It appears the sad news was a sudden turn of events for the blond beauty. Earlier this week she was joking on Twitter about her "baaaaad" hair day and posting pics of funny faces for all to see.

But modest Duff has been looking better than ever as of late. After giving birth to her son Luca in May of last year, the former Disney star has been working on her fitness and logging major hours in the gym.

Last November, she told In Touch magazine that getting into her skinny jeans as quickly as possible wasn't her top priority at the time. "I'm not back to where I want to be, but I'm not stressing it," she told the mag.

Nowadays, Duff is completely back to her pre-baby shape was recently spotted showing off her bikini body during a vacation in Cabos San Lucas.

Duff appeared svelte in a dark green two-piece bikini with a white scarf wrapped around her head, and was snapped holding her 1-year-old son.

Her older sister, Haylie, was also seen taking little Luca for a stroll on the beach after lunch. The ladies and baby were joined on their summer getaway by their mother and Hilary's hockey star hubby Mike Comrie.

Keep your head up, Hilary!
