Demotix / Splash NewsWhile partner Brad Pitt continues to make the promotional rounds Stateside to hype his forthcoming zombie epic, World War Z, Angelina Jolie is taking time out of her busy schedule for a much more serious mission: comforting refugees whose lives have been upended by Syria's civil war.
The Oscar winner traveled to Jordan on Tuesday, where she met with new Syrian refugees at the Jordan border as part of a fact-finding effort in her role as a special envoy for UNHRC, the U.N. refugee agency.
She also embarked on the trip to mark World Refugee Day, which will be commemorated tomorrow, June 20.
While meeting with refugees at the Jaber border crossing, Jolie listened to stories of families whose loved ones have been killed, whose homes have been destroyed by bombs and whose towns have been left devastated by fighting that's led to the deaths of 93,000 people and created more than 1.6 million refugees.
In a post on UNHRC's website, Jolie said the aim of her visit is "to show support for Syria's refugees, to call on the world to address their plight, and to better understand needs in Jordan and other countries in the region most directly affected by his devastating conflict."
The actress, who last visited the Jordanian border in December, urged the world to step up humanitarian aid to keep pace with the tragedy and find a political settlement to the conflict.
