Rebecca Gayheart pleads no contest, Grinch eyes home-video record, ABC yanks Thieves, more

SENTENCED: Former Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Rebecca Gayheart pleading no contest Tuesday to a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter, following a June accident in which her car struck and killed a nine-year-old boy. Gayheart was sentenced to three years' probation and 750 hours of community service, and her driver's license was suspended for a year.

WHO-RRIFIC: Universal's Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas pulling in more than $145 million in DVD and VHS sales, putting it in line to become the top-grossing home video of the year, according to studio estimates.

PEOPLE POWER: Jennifer Lopez, Everybody Loves Raymond, Julia Roberts and, um, Pearl Harbor among the nominees for the 28th annual People's Choice Awards. The populist ceremony airs January 13 on CBS.

SLAVE 4 FILM: Britney Spears, apparently getting more serious about her big-screen career, signing with agency ICM and creating her own yet-to-be-titled production company. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she's also in final negotiations with screenwriter James V. Hart (Contact) to write a film for her to star in. Britney's big-screen debut is the coming-of-age flick Crossroads, due out in February.

WIZ KID: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone taking in a Thanksgiving holiday-best $82.4 million over the five-day weekend, according to final studio figures Monday, to easily remain the nation's number-one movie. The boy sorcerer flick has earned $187 million so far.

TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL: Angel star David Boreanaz tied the knot with Jaime Bergman Saturday in Palm Springs.

CAUGHT: ABC canceling its low-rated Friday spy series Thieves. The show, starring John Stamos and Melissa George, averaged just 7.2 million viewers after eight episodes.

CONTINUANCE: ABC showing some brotherly love by picking up the back nine episodes of Philly, guaranteeing a full season for the Steven Bochco drama.

AMAZING SLOT: CBS airing the season finale of The Amazing Race on Thursday, December 13, immediately following Survivor: Africa. The network is hoping the reality block will draw more viewers to Amazing Race, which is already coming back for a second season.

WHO KNEW? Actress Kate Winslet releasing her first single on Monday in England. The ballad, titled "What If," comes from the soundtrack to a new animated version of A Christmas Carol for which Winslet provides one of the voices.

GREEN LOVE: Jennifer Connelly (Requiem for a Dream) signing on as the female lead in Ang Lee's adaptation of The Hulk, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Connelly will play the love interest of Hulk alter ego Dr. Bruce Banner, who will be played by Eric Bana.

STARS AND STRIPES: Disney joining 20th Century Fox in sending first-run films and several of its classics to U.S. military installations overseas to entertain front-line troops.

SCULLY AT THE HELM: The X-Files star Gillian Anderson making her directorial debut with Speed of Light, a film based on the Elizabeth Rosner novel about a man who has become a recluse after being raised by a father who survived the Holocaust.

BEYOND THE MAT: The World Wrestling Federation producing WWF Divas, a one-hour prime-time entertainment special that will be similar to the TV edition of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. The show will air in March on UPN.
