Demi Lovato tells it like it is.

On Wednesday, the 20-year singer candidly opened up about the ups and downs she and Selena Gomez have experienced during their years of friendship.

"We've been through a lot together," Lovato told MTV News. "We've had periods of times when we grew apart, and we just didn't really talk."

"But now we're in a place where we realize that life is so short, and that when you have people in your life that love you so much, then you should just always be around them," she added.

"And she's gonna be a big sister, and I want to be around for that! So everything about her—she has a great soul, she's talented, she's beautiful, and she will always be really, really close to my heart."

Aw. The "Heart Attack" singer also dropped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and chatted about another famous friend: Simon Cowell!

"We get along!" she said of her fellow X Factor judge. "It's weird 'cause there's, like, a huge age difference!"

Jimmy laughed, joking to Lovato that Cowell, 53, must appreciate her pointing out the age gap.

"Yeah, I don't think he likes being old," she quipped. "But he loves our friendship."

And, of course, Jimmy couldn't not ask Demi about the new "I am a warrior" tattoo on her back and what it meant.

"I have a song on my album [Demi] called 'Warrior,' and it's very, very meaningful to me," she explained. "It's really heavy, the lyrics, but it's an inspirational song as well…It's a negative thing turned positive"

"This is a song that was really difficult for me to write, record and now release," she said. "It was kinda like a tribute to releasing an album, as well as overcoming some really, really difficult things in my life."

That she has done, and she's done it with grace.
