Tom Hanks has an unusual cure for the common cold: getting juiced.

Turning up on The Late Show with David Letterman Tuesday night, the Oscar winner joked about using steroids to purportedly kick a nasty bug while he's in the midst of his Tony-nominated run in the Broadway play Lucky Guy.

"Say you have a cold and it happens now and it sweeps through the theatrical community. The cast of Pippin goes down…you have to go see the magic doctor," Hanks said with a straight face. "And then she puts you on the juice."

"Whoa! Well, that's not legal," noted Letterman.

"Oh no, it's completely legal, Dave," the thesp replied facetiously before leaning out of his chair to the audience and adding, "I'm lying!"

"I don't think I can trust you or your doctor," laughed Dave.

Hanks then nodded to band leader Paul Shaffer, suggesting rock 'n' roll people use steroids all the time to perform.

"You take the steroid, and the only repercussion is you will not be in the hall of fame," quipped the 56-year-old actor. "But you do get back on that horse and you are on stage and you feel grrrreat!"

Of course, Hanks was only kidding. But it certainly makes for a good story!
