Mother of six reveals in a New York Times op-ed that she underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning she was genetically predisposed to developing breast cancer

Angelina Jolie's humanitarian work has already been an inspiration to many, and now her dignified honesty about her health has earned the unbridled respect of many more.

On Tuesday, the Oscar winner revealed in a New York Times op-ed that she underwent a preventive double mastectomy in February after learning that she had an 87 percent chance of developing breast cancer due to her genetic predisposition.

"I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer," the 37-year-old mother of six writes. "It is my hope that they, too, will be will able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options."

Jolie's courage and openness (she also called out her "loving and supportive" partner, Brad Pitt) have left many in awe, as celebs—including those who've survived their own battles with breast cancer—took to Twitter to share their reactions.
