Prince Harry to Join Charity Race to South Pole to Benefit Disabled Veterans

Rugged royal will participate in the 200-mile trek, which kicks off in November and seeks to raise funds for military charities

Prince Harry is ready for the big chill.

The 28-year-old royal has already pledged his support for disabled veterans via an appearance in London today at the kickoff for the Walking With the Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge, an upcoming trek that seeks to raise funds for military charities.

Now Harry is upping the ante: Not only is Prince William's brother a patron of the cause, but he will also be participating in the 208-mile trek to the South Pole this November.

The monthlong race will feature three teams of wounded military personnel from the U.K., U.S. and a combo Australia-Canadian contingent competing against each other.

"These men and women have given their all in the cause of freedom," Harry said at the kickoff event, per People. "That they should once again step into the breach, this time facing down the extreme mental and physical challenges of trekking to the South Pole, just underlines their remarkable qualities: toughness of mind, an unquenchable spirit that refuses to say 'I am beaten.'" 

Harry, who's been a patron of the cause since 2011, will reportedly serve as a mentor, camping out with the participants as they endure 50 mph winds and temperatures that can plunge to 50 below zero.

The competition will kick off in November as the teams journey across 208 miles of the Antarctic to the South Pole, and Harry has promised quite the welcome reception at the finish line.

"As a member of the British team, I will have a brew ready for you when you join us at the Pole," he cracked at the launch event.

Harry is expected to start prepping for the arduous trek this summer.
