On Sunday before the 2013 ACM Awards in Las Vegas, the country-pop star had a long-delayed date with 19-year-old cancer survivor Kevin McGuire.
In February 2012, Kevin, who was then battling leukemia, asked Taylor via his Facebook page to be his date to prom. Although Taylor couldn't make it to the dance, she asked Kevin if he'd be her date to the 2012 ACM Awards.
Unfortunately, when the show rolled around on April 1, 2012, Kevin was unable to make the trip due to a chemo-induced fever. Taylor gave him a shoutout when she accepted her Entertainer of the Year award and followed that up with inviting Kevin—and his family—to the show the next year.
"I think Taylor is one of those people who you don't really see that often. Classy, sweet and kind," Kevin told Philadelphia's CBS affiliate just weeks before the fated meeting. "Going through what we've been through…it's symbolic, in a way. It started my chapter with my cancer. Now it's behind me; I can close the book on it."
And what a happy story he has to tell for many years to come.
