If fans of Smash are looking for some good news with regard to the fate of the NBC series, this is not the day for it.

Debra Messing has been cast as the lead in a currently untitled CBS comedy pilot from (ironically enough) Smash executive producers Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky. The series is an adaptation of the Israeli series Mother's Day, and will center on Messing as a married mom trying to balance her career and her home life. The Will & Grace alum will also serve as co-executive producer.

The CBS pilot is in second position to Messing's commitments to Smash, should the struggling show be picked up for a third season. But after dismal ratings and a move to the death slot Saturday time slot, the odds of that happening are probably the same odds as anyone starting a "Bring Back Awful Ellis" campaign.
