Fran Drescher, who whined her way into millions of TV viewers' homes in The Nanny, is recovering in a Los Angeles hospital after undergoing emergency cancer surgery.

According to her publicist, doctors discovered a cancerous growth in Drescher's uterus, and it was determined that it needed to be removed immediately. The actress is said to be doing fine.

"She's really lucky," said Drescher's publicist, Cari Ross. "They caught it early, and now she doesn't have to have radiation or chemotherapy. The doctors say there is no reason to think she will be anything but 100 percent healthy."

The 42-year-old nasally-voiced sitcom star is expected to be released from Cedars Sinai Hospital within a week.

Her schtick on The Nanny, which premiered on CBS in 1993, brought the comedienne a devoted TV following. She retired her housekeeping routine after a tumble in the ratings in 1999.

Since then, she hasn't been on television lately as much as she's been at the typewriter, penning a movie based on a 1998 article on dating she wrote for Harper's Bazaar and finishing a pilot she's written for MTV.
