Oscars Trend Alert: Pale Gowns on Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried and Octavia Spencer

You don't need a bright color to stand out on an Oscars red carpet, right, K.Stew?

Now that's a bright idea!

One of the biggest trends on the Oscars red carpet Sunday was a light palate: Soft grays, delicate blues and lots of ivory.

No matter the star—Charlize Theron and Queen Latifah in white, Zoe Saldana in ice gray, or Octavia Spencer in sparkling champagne—the effect was the same: Pale fire.

Most of the dresses were embellished with sparkles or texture to keep them from fading out against the strong red of the carpet. Theron's peplum had a delicate dazzle, while Kristen Stewart rocked a Reem Acra with both tulle and burnout detailing. Even Jennifer Lawrence's daring Dior featured subtle bas-relief-like texturing.

The result: Stunning looks that needed little, if any, accessorizing.
