Despite a rampaging snowstorm, fashion designers stomped forward with their shows at New York Fashion Week. And on Sunday, E! News chatted up Malandrino at her sleek presentation at a minimalist loft in Chelsea—where she debuted a beautiful texture-rich, geometric-laden collection—for her take on the top trend predictions for fall 2013.
"I will say, an elongated silhouette and mid-calf skirt lengths," the designer tells us. "And [a] deep color palette—deep and rich, with aubergines, deep greens, purple and navy. A silhouette of femininity but in a more geometric way."
Indeed, Malandrino's fall 2013 collection features a profusion of geometric lines and intricate patterned embroidery—an inspiration, she says, that she drew from Art Deco's "clean" but "abstract" aesthetic and evident in her collection's mélange of sharp mini-dresses and body-skimming columns that mix velvet, satin and leather to give the look an "urban edge."
So why does she predict a movement toward geometric shapes for fall 2013?
"Because I feel our world has become quite designed through lines, and not anymore into this [kind of] poetic flowers," she tells us, emphasizing the contrast between today's purposeful, disciplined austerity versus a verdant laissez-faire that characterized a more carefree past.
"We are into something that is more sharp because our life is in a different rhythm," she explains. "Everything has more reason, has more shape, has more structure."
As for her forecast for the must-have fashion item for fall 2013, she doesn't hesitate to offer up another prediction.
"I will say a very comfortable wrap coat, something that is very ample and large and longer to really wrap a more sleek silhouette of a slim dress."
And, no doubt, something to amply protect smart style mavens against the next Nor'easter!
