Last we heard, How I Met Your Mother was "close" to getting a ninth season, but the deal had yet to be closed and contracts had yet to be signed. Well, according to Cobie Smulders, it's definitely happening! No, you're probably not surprised, and a ninth season has been all but officially confirmed, but it's nice to get some news straight from the beautiful horse's mouth.

"It's a tricky thing. There's a lot of people involved in a decision like that. But luckily everybody made the same one and came on board," Smulders tells us while promoting her new film Safe Haven. "I sort of thought it was going to happen and then around the holidays when it started feeling like, 'Oh, it might not [happen],' it made me really sad. Because it's the end of an era and How I Met Your Mother has become like a second home to me. So it'll be nice starting season nine knowing this is it. Soak it in. Really be grateful and enjoy this last year."

Smulders added about the game plan for next season: "I don't really know their intention for next season. I know they've figured it out. I know they've figured out everything."

Watch: Cobie Smulders on "HIMYM" Season 9

At the Winter Press Tour a couple of weeks ago, CBS boss Nina Tassler promised that the HIMYM deal would be finalized soon, but could give no official announcement regarding season nine. "We are confident and excited that it will all work out and almost everything is completed," she said.

When season eight premiered, we talked to creator and executive producer Carter Bays about the possibility of a ninth season. "If we get the opportunity to do it, we definitely have another season in us," he told us. "We have a lot of stories that we're not able to get to now that we would love to do if there is a ninth season. We love having this overall story [of the mother] and that's a huge part of it, but I don't think we'd feel like we're cheating everybody by doing another year of a show that a lot of people love."
