There's Something About Mary led the way with eight nods as nominations were announced for the 1999 MTV Movie Video Awards, honoring the best (on-screen smooches, included) in film.
Oscar-winner Shakespeare in Love managed just four overall nominations. Leading lady Gwyneth Paltrow scored one of them--giving the fair one the chance to repeat her Academy Award night triumph in the company of cable TV heathens.
Winners are to be announced June 5. The show is scheduled to air June 10 on MTV. No word yet on host or performers.
There's Something About Mary and Shakespeare will battle it out for the Best Movie title against Armageddon, Saving Private Ryan and The Truman Show.
Paltrow's competition in the Best Female race shapes up this way: Jennifer Love Hewitt (Can't Hardly Wait), Jennifer Lopez (Out of Sight), Liv Tyler (Armageddon) and There's Something About Mary star Cameron Diaz.
In the boy division, Ben Affleck (Armageddon), Jim Carrey (The Truman Show), Tom Hanks (Saving Private Ryan), Adam Sandler (The Waterboy) and Will Smith (Enemy of the State) are up for Best Male. (Sorry, Roberto Benigni doesn't compute here.)
Chucky, the maniacal doll from the Chucky flicks, scored some rare award-show recognition, nabbing a nomination for Best Villain for his performance in The Bride of Chucky.
Nominations were determined by a national poll of MTV viewers. Winners also will be voted on by the public.
