The not so little black dress dominated the 2013 Golden Globes red carpet. We saw many a leading lady hit the award show red carpet in floor-length gowns in the timeless shade, known for its slimming—and universally flattering!—effect.

Sure, the choice may strike some as a safe one, but red carpet veterans managed to spice up their gowns with everything from sexy slits to dazzling embellishments. Take Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who showed off her mile-long legs in a stunning Saint Laurent with a thigh-high slit and an edgy leather belt, or Katharine McPhee, who drew attention to her gorgeous gams in a sexy Theyskens' Theory dress, which also highlighted her décolletage with a daringly low neckline. Allison Williams opted for a similar look, with the plunging neckline of her black J. Mendel gown.

Sofia Vergara and Salma Hayek shined bright on the red carpet in sparkling strapless numbers that hugged their covetable curves. Vergara managed to avoid a wardrobe malfunction in a glittering black gown and let her seriously sparkly outfit take center stage by opting for a simple down 'do and a few rings, while Hayek dazzled in a glittering Gucci gown with an adorable bow adornment that sat on her hip.

And while we may be used to seeing Vergara, McPhee and the other gals step out in more colorful outfits, Adele kept true to form, not only choosing a gown in her go-to black, but also sticking with her fave floor-length, three-quarter sleeve dress silhouette.  For her first post-baby red carpet appearance, she chose a Burberry gown with a bead-encrusted neckline that was very similar to the Burberry dress she wore to the 2012 Brit Awards.

What do you think of these stars' black gowns? Are they classy or a bit boring?
