A day before the starlet is expected to appear in a New York City court as a result of her arrest in November for allegedly punching a woman at a nightclub, her mom Dina Lohan is speaking out and blaming a violent marriage to Michael Lohan plagued by domestic abuse as the reason for Lindsay's troubles.
"Lindsay saw her dad abuse me—that's why she's so screwed up," the mother of four told the New York Daily News on Sunday.
According to Dina, her ex-hubby—whom she divorced in 2007 after an unhappy 22-year union—assaulted her on several occasions, though she never filed charges against him.
"Michael beat the hell out of me," the 50-year-old Lohan said, offering up family photos and medical records as evidence.
Among her shocking claims, she detailed a 1986 incident in which they went to dinner and after he started boozing and doing cocaine Michael allegedly gave her a bruise under her right. She backed up her allegation with a family photo of the then-young mom holding baby Lindsay and showing a bruised face, and hospital paperwork dated Dec. 4, 1986, that noted she was treated for "blunt trauma."
"When Lindsay saw the photo, she was furious," added Dina. "She said, 'Tell the world! Talk about it!'"
When asked why she didn't report him to the police, Lohan noted that Michael, then a Wall Street trader, was bound for jail the next year on a securities fraud charge.
But all the tumult in their home life, she said, made a deep impression on LiLo when she was a budding child star, so she shouldn't be blamed for her erratic behavior as an adult.
"She saw a lot of crazy stuff. I want the world to know the root of her problems," stated the sometime actress and former reality star.
Michael Lohan could not be reached for comment, but he did give his version of events to the Daily News pertaining to the 1986 domestic violence allegation, saying he "slapped [Dina]" in the face with the back of his hand, but only after she hit him with an ice tray.
Dina went on to accuse Michael of being addicted to cocaine and revealed that things got so bad in their relationship the two became estranged and she alleges that he ended up raping her on Feb. 14, 1990, while she was staying at her parents' house as the kids were asleep. She didn't report it, however, she said, since her hubby was going to prison for three years—this time for insider trading.
Dina said she stayed in the marriage for the sake of the children, but now she says she's coming forward to "set the record straight."
Michael adamantly denied the other abuse claims as well as the rape allegation, insisting the sex was consensual.
"How can you rape a person when they're on top of you?" Lohan wondered.
He noted that Dina is using the past as a way to excuse her own parenting decisions.
"She's bringing this up now because she's drinking and partying with Lindsay," Lohan pointed out. "And she keeps robbing Lindsay. She is the devil."
