"I want the No. 1 spot, you know, that's what I came here to do," the eerily poised Diamond White announced Wednesday after winning praise all around for going uptempo "I Wanna Dance With Somebody."
Even the often-bored Demi Lovato enjoyed it, although she requested that Diamond "work more on [her] performances"—to which a wide-eyed Simon Cowell responded incredulously, "Demi, I don't know what else this girl could've just brought!"
Paige Thomas, who's been in and out of danger all season, also had the judges rejoicing this week after she managed to freshen up the ever-viral "Never Gonna Give You Up," originally by Rick Astley.
Simon suggested the performance was so successful because Paige "got her own way" (meaning, Demi didn't), and Demi definitely took offense, insisting (when she was able to get a word in edgewise), "We worked on it together."
But both Paige and Diamond may find themselves playing second—and third—fiddle once again to Carly Rose Sonenclar, who, in our opinion, took the real risk by tackling Adele's "Rollin' in the Deep." It wasn't as perfect as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," but, as Simon said, "the first half was good, the second half was sensational."
Heck, even when Demi and Simon were in agreement about a performance they still found things to bicker about.
"One day, when I get married, I want my husband to love me as much as you love your wife," Demi praised Tate Stevens after he worked his usual country magic on Keith Urban's "I Want to Love Somebody Like You." "She's a very lucky girl."
"Demi, I think that might have been a bit of a tall order, actually," cracked Simon. (A little below the belt, don't you think?)
"Well, at least I'm going to be married one day," she retorted.
"You don't think I will? One day I might get married," Simon said. "This is about Tate," Demi fired back, putting a lid on the exchange.
Turning in performances that probably won't get them to No. 1 this week were Vino Alan (his "You Lost That Loving Feeling" was kind of a snoozer, and not just to Demi) and CeCe Frey, who got a little lost in her Lady Gaga look and Christina Aguilera impression doing "Lady Marmalade."
Fifth Harmony pulled through in the wake of the death of Ally Brooke's grandfather, the lyrics of Kelly Clarkson's "What Doesn't Kill You" certainly fitting at the time. But, as Demi pointed out, it would have been better if they had moved around on the stage more and L.A. Reid noted that they sounded a bit flat.
Emblem3 split the vote with their rather adorable rendition of the Monkees' "I'm a Believer." Interestingly, both Demi and Britney Spears didn't get it, and the elder statesmen loved it.
"If I were chairman of a major record label, which I am, I would sign you and put the entire building behind you—because you have the X Factor!" L.A. raved.
Two more aspiring stars will be sent home tomorrow night. Alicia Keys and last year's runner-up, Josh Krajcik, will perform.
