Scott Weiland in Detox...Again

Stone Temple Pilots crooner misses court date because he's in rehab, lawyer says

Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland and his persistent heroin habit are back in a drug-treatment center, his lawyer said Thursday.

Weiland, who was busted June 1 in Manhattan for heroin possession, was due in a Los Angeles court today to answer a separate narcotics charge filed against him in February.

But Weiland was a no-show for the hearing. Lawyer Mike Nasatir asked the judge to postpone the court date while the gone-solo-and-glam performer dries out in a clinic in Ventura County, California, about 50 miles north of L.A.

"My client is in treatment. He's trying to deal with a major problem that affects many people in our society," Nasatir told Superior Court Judge Larry Fidler.

Nasatir added that the singer will soon "be back doing what he's trained to do and where his talents lie."

Nice defense, but the prosecutor painted a bit more troubling picture for the judge: "They say he's on medication, and he's not in any condition to get here."

To which, the judge replied this wasn't the first time Weiland missed a court appearance.

"Yes," Nasatir responded, "but this time, I know where he is."

Good enough for Findler, who pushed back the hearing to June 25. But if Weiland misses that one, the judge said he'll issue a warrant for the singer's arrest.

Weiland was rung up in February for possession of a needle and heroin. He faces a maximum three years in state prison if convicted of the charges.

Weiland's no stranger to the L.A. court system: Three years ago he was caught with both heroin and cocaine and was ordered to rehab.

No word yet on what impact the recent New York arrest will have on his Cali record.

Professionally, Weiland and the rest of the Pilots haven't cut a record together since 1996's Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop. Both parties claim things are amicable, but the singer's bandmates have formed another group, Talk Show, and Weiland recently released a critically acclaimed yet commercially panned solo album, 12 Bar Blues.
