Home Improvement star Tim Allen checked himself into an alcohol rehabilitation clinic Thursday.

He had to. The treatment was part of a plea bargain the 44-year-old actor made last year following a DUI arrest in his native Michigan. At the time, he was placed on one year's probation, fined $500 and ordered to seek counseling.

The rehab stint won't affect shooting of Home Improvement. The series just wrapped its seventh season.

Last May, police in Bloomfield Township, Michigan, nabbed Allen for doing 70 in a 40 mph zone in his Ferrari. His blood alcohol level was 0.15, well over the 0.10 legal alcohol limit in Michigan. The former stand-up comedian resides in a nearby Detroit suburb.

In a statement released shortly after his plea, Allen--whose father was killed by a drunk driver in 1964--said: "I have been treated fairly by the authorities in my home town...My inexcusable lapse in judgment is a mistake that is embarrassing to myself, my family and my associates. I have learned from this experience, and I am fortunate that my family and associates have forgiven me."

The Jungle 2 Jungle star served two years in federal prison for selling cocaine to an undercover cop in the late '70s and has become an outspoken antidrug advocate since then.
