The iconic blue and white gingham dress worn by Judy Garland in the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz was sold for—wait for it—$480,0000 at a Beverly Hills auction on Saturday.
Who put down the cash for this legendary item, and where's it going?!
Unfortunately, the buyer of the Garland dress, made by MGM costume designer Adrian, was not identified and its new location was not disclosed (but we'll just say its somewhere over the rainbow).
Julien's Auctions reportedly said the price for the pinafore dress and white puffy-sleeved blouse was in line with estimates—and although it's a pretty penny—but it doesn't even come close to the amount of moola spent on a similar dress worn during tests for The Wizard of Oz that fetched $910,000 in 2011.
So why the big price gap? Auctioneer Darren Julien said the price difference was due to the fact that only a few test dresses were made for The Wizard of Oz, whereas there are about seven versions of Garland's signature dress.
Other big items that were auctioned off include a Steve McQueen racing jacket for $50,000 and a slice of Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding cake for $1,375.
