The New York Post says Jerry Seinfeld, 42, broke up with Shoshanna Lonstein, 21, his girlfriend of five years. The newspaper quotes "pals" of the couple, who came forward after photos were published showing Shoshanna seemingly smooching with another man in New York.

Pals said that Shoshanna was "totally platonic" with the man--then they broke down and told the Post the whole story. Shoshanna and Jerry have been separated for almost two months. "There was no nasty scene--they both just knew it was time for a break."

Shoshanna will graduate this year from UCLA. Pals said she never liked Los Angeles much and plans to return to New York.

So now that Jerry and Shoshanna are just pals--can we ask some questions, please? Like, didn't this relationship break some kind of law? She was 16 when this started, for God's sake. And what about Mr. and Mrs. Lonstein, were they some kind of characters out of Gigi? Guess, we'll never know now.

Be advised that all New York Post stories are freshness-dated for your enjoyment and best consumed immediately before second thoughts set in. For instance, the Post recently made much of the fact that Dean Cain might star in the Broadway production of The King and I this summer. But Cain's publicist said that the actor hasn't talked to anybody about the role. "He'll neither play The King nor I," the publicist said.
