By the looks of this action-packed trailer, Kirk and Spock are boldly kicking some major intergalactic butt!

Trekkies will delight in playing the legendary captain of the Starship Enterprise and his BVF (Best Vulcan Forever, natch) in the new Star Trek video game from Paramount Pictures and Namco Bandai, which was unveiled at Gamescom in Germany on Wednesday.

But does it tell us anything about the upcoming movie sequel once again being helmed by J.J. Abrams, who rebooted the franchise with 2009's blockbuster Star Trek?

The teaser shows James T. Kirk and Spock beaming down to a Mars-like planet and blasting their way around various space stations and exotic jungles while everyone's favorite pointy-eared sidekick puts the hurt on a nasty monster.

But there are few hints about the game's original story, which was penned by God of War author Marianne Krawczyk in consultation with Star Trek series writer-producers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof.

"Your Vulcan is dead ahead, Captain," intones a voice.

"We better be ready," replies Kirk, voiced by Chris Pine, who, of course, reprises the role on the big screen in next summer's Star Trek 2.

And no doubt so are fanboys. Star Trek: The Game, which will be compatible with Xbox360, PlayStation 3 and PC consoles, arrives in stores in early 2013.
