From the gloom, a ray of sunshine.

Katie Medley, a member of the Dark Knight Rises audience who survived the July 20 shooting rampage in Colorado that left 12 people dead and her husband, Caleb, in critical condition, gave birth to the couple's first child this morning.

Hugo Jackson Medley was born at 7:11 a.m. at University of Colorado Hospital, according to the Denver Post.

Caleb remains in a medically induced coma, having suffered brain damage after being shot in the head. The aspiring stand-up comic, who, according to his website had advanced in a local comedy competition two nights before the shooting, also lost an eye.

Caleb's younger brother Seth told the Post that the Medleys don't have health insurance and could face roughly $2 million in medical bills. A means of donating money to the young family has also been established on Caleb's site.

"We know that Caleb will get better," Seth said, "and he won't stay out of that child's life."

The hospital said in a statement that mother and baby were doing well.

Earlier today, Christian Bale visited with shooting victims at Medical Center of Aurora and visited a memorial set up for those killed outside the Century 16 multiplex, where a lone gunman fired into a packed theater showing The Dark Knight Rises.

Suspect James Holmes, who made his first court appearance yesterday, is expected to be charged with 12 counts of murder next Monday.
