Joseph Gordon-Levitt has joined his director and costars in paying tribute to the 12 people killed last week in a mass shooting at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater during a late-night screening of The Dark Knight Rises.

"My most sincere sympathies go out to the families of the victims in Aurora," the actor tweeted today in response to the horrific incident.

Suspect James Holmes, who police say opened fire on a theater full of people at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Friday, appeared in court today in Centennial, Colo. He was apprised of his rights and ordered held without bail pending arraignment on July 30.

"My heart aches and breaks for the lives taken and altered by this unfathomably senseless act," Anne Hathaway said in a statement over the weekend. "I am at a loss for words how to express my sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."

Christian Bale also released a statement: "Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them."

Gary Oldman offered his "prayers and deepest sympathies" to the victims and their families following this "horrific act."

As investigators tried to piece together what happened in the hours following the shooting and Warner Bros. Pictures grappled with the PR disaster in front of them, Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan lamented the "appalling crime" that occurred in what is supposed to be a safe, welcoming haven.

"I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime," the filmmaker stated. "The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me."
