The mug shot of James Holmes, the man allegedly behind The Dark Knight Rises tragedy, has been made public.

And as the world contemplates how this image contrasts with earlier photos of the suspected shooter, Holmes' family has also broken its silence and spoken out on the terrible tragedy.

The Holmes' family lawyer spoke during a press conference in San Diego Monday afternoon and stated that James' family stands by their son and remains concerned about the victims. "They want to reiterate that their hearts go out to the victims and their families," the lawyer said.

When asked if the family supports Holmes, the lawyer replied, "Yes, they do. He's their son."

Although the Holmes family was not present, the lawyer spoke on their behalf and sought to clarify a recent ABC News report where Arlene Holmes reportedly identified her son as the shooter, saying, "You have the right person."

The family lawyer claims that Arlene's response was actually in reference to herself—when a reporter asked if she was Arlene Holmes, the mother of James Holmes.

Earlier reports suggested that Arlene expressed concern over her son's alleged involvement when contacted by the media, telling a reporter, "I need to call the police."

However, ABC News stands by its initial report that Arlene was referring to her son.

Arlene's statement continues, "At this time, we will not be discussing James and his relationship to the family."

Earlier this morning, Holmes appeared in court for the first time, giving the public a view of his fiery red hair.

Currently, Holmes is being held in solitary confinement. He is scheduled to appear in an Arapahoe County courtroom on Monday in Centennial, Colo.
