George Lopez is being challenged to an old-fashioned Mexican standoff.

During his live stand-up special on HBO Saturday night, the 51-year-old funnyman wasn't in a laughing mood when he launched into an expletive-filled tirade against Arizona's Sheriff Joe Arpaio—blasting him over his controversial anti-immigration policies that have roiled the Latino community, of which Lopez is a member.

What he didn't expect, however, was the lawman's response.

"Sheriff Joe in Arizona, f--k you, you f--king puto," railed Lopez. "How about that? F--k you. You fat motherf--ker. F--k you."

They weren't much in the way of jokes, but they drew mostly applause from his audience with a smattering of boos. The comedian also took shots at Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting Mitt Romney, calling him the Spanish word for a male prostitute.

But his most heated rhetoric was reserved for Arpaio, who, as the man responsible for law enforcement in Maricopa County, is the center of an uproar over his office's alleged racial profiling of Latinos to identify illegal immigrants as well as accusations of abuses of power that have resulted in a Justice Department lawsuit (you can watch the full NSFW rant here).

But the sheriff wasn't without a sense of humor, either.

"What, is he the spokesman for the open border people?" quipped Arpaio. "See, I can be funny too. Now let's see if he has the guts to meet me and I'll be happy to take him to a Mexican lunch."

Them's fightin' words.
