Perhaps Tom Cruise's superspy alter ego Ethan Hunt could've sniffed this one out.

Katie Holmes dropped a colossal bombshell by filing for divorce from the megastar last week, but had she been hinting about the split all along?

Holmes chatted with Elle magazine six weeks ago for the mag's latest issue, which hits newsstands on July 17, and even back then, she may have provided telling glimpses into her relationship with Cruise, the challenges of their high-profile marriage, and what she described as her "new phase."

"I definitely feel much more comfortable in my own skin," the 33-year-old reportedly told the mag when pressed about being in her 30s.

"I feel sexier. I think in my 20s, it's like you're trying too hard to figure everything out," she said, before adding, "I'm starting to come into my own. It's like a new phase."

Holmes also opened up about what it was like being married to Cruise, who just landed atop Forbes magazine's list of Hollywood's highest-paid actors.

"He has been Tom Cruise for 30 years," she said. "I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that."

As for whether their marriage helped boost her career, the former Dawson's Creeker revealed that she's actually had to push harder for roles these days.

"Things are not handed to anyone. If anything, you work a little bit harder when you're in such visible circumstances," she said.

In fact, affectionate talk about Cruise seemed to have been noticeably absent during the interview. According to the New York Post, a source revealed that behind the scenes, "Katie didn't speak about Tom in a lovey-dovey way at all. She deflected the Tom questions and brought them around to herself."

The actress appears to be quickly getting her life back on track: Over the Fourth of July holiday, she and daughter Suri were spotted grabbing some ice cream and shopping for burger patties and buns.

As she left the store, she told a New York Daily News reporter, "I'm all right. Thank you."
