Star Trek 2. Just the words alone strike tremors of excitement in the hearts of many a fanboy and girl. So it's little wonder, then, that when the first ostensible scraps of footage made their way online yesterday in the form of a teaser trailer, geeks enthusiasts the world over flocked to it.

Movie blogs and various media outlets wasted no time in joining the fans in analyzing each and every one of the trailer's Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Benedict Cumberbatch-starring 71 seconds as if it were gospel.

There was, of course, one small problem...

Stellar (ahem) as it was, the trailer was entirely fan-made and not even remotely official.

That the just over a minutelong tease contained no actual new footage and only stills of the franchise's three big stars should've been the first clue, but then again, sometimes love really is blind.

In any case, the trailer—which was indeed sent out into the world under the auspices of being fan-made, as it happens—was impressive nonetheless, and not just for its wildfire-like spread onto the Internet. Alas, fans will have to wait a bit longer for the movie's real first look, with producers intimating (though far from promising) that they're hopeful there will be some footage to show at next month's Comic-Con.

In the meantime, we'll have to suss out what we can about Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Khan and the rest of the Enterprise crew. Which isn't much.

Luckily, there's plenty of time for investigating: The film is due out May 17, 2013.
