The results of Anne Hathaway's weight-loss efforts are obvious.

Of course, the normally more vivacious star is playing the consumptive prostitute Fantine—who, to add insult to injury, is forced to sell her hair for a few francs—in the upcoming Les Misérables, also starring Hugh Jackman as tortured hero Jean Valjean.

Hence the usually suave stud's grizzled appearance.

But though Hathaway did indeed have to lose both hair and pounds for the role...

At least the hit Broadway musical, on which this latest adaptation of Les Misérables is based, did away with the part in Victor Hugo's novel in which Fantine sells her front teeth!

Hathaway's camp has insisted that she took no drastic efforts to lose weight, but rather just cut down where cutting down was due in order to look "more frail."

The film also stars Russell Crowe as Jean Veljeans's nemesis, the relentless Inspector Javert, Amanda Seyfried as the sheltered Cosette, and Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as the comedically treacherous Thénardiers.
