Trekkers are going to be beaming next year.

A teaser trailer has hit the Web at warp speed for the new Star Trek video game, which is slated for release early next year before J.J. Abrams unleashes his highly anticipated Star Trek 2 on May 17, 2013.

And by the look of it, the game boldly goes where no other Trek game has gone before, as it plays out in 3-D like the upcoming sequel. And like the sequel, it stars Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock.

It also features plenty of the kind of action-packed adventure that was a signature of the director's 2009's big-screen reboot, including epic free falls and phaser battles that make good on Abrams' apparent aim to make Gene Roddenberry's sci-fi series as hip and cool as rival franchise Star Wars once was.

Per Forbes, the original story dreamed up by Star Trek's writing-producing trio of Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof will serve as a bridge between the two movies. While we don't see the new baddie (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), we get plenty of Kirk and Spock running and blasting at aliens.

Star Trek the video game, developed by Paramount Pictures, Namco Bandai, the helmer's own Bad Robot Interactive and gamemaker Digital Extremes, will be available for Xbox 360, Xbox Live, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms.

Play long and prosper.
