For the first time, Rainn Wilson confirmed today that an Office spinoff with his character Dwight Schrute is currently in the very early stages of development at NBC. So what does he think of it?

"That is the worst idea I've ever heard in my life!" he told our E! pal Giuliana Rancic while on the red carpet for the Screen Actors Guild Awards. "Spinoffs never work! Don't people know that?! Why would people think that would ever work, especially for a character as annoying as Dwight Schrute?"

Wait...Is he serious?

Nope. Though clearly, Rainn has heard his fair share of haters about the idea, since word of the spinoff broke a few days ago. The idea is somewhat polarizing among Office fans.

"No, spinoffs are awesome," Rainn clarified to us. "We are talking about a Dwight spinoff. It could be really cool. It would be on his farm which would be a bed and breakfast and have a crazy managerie of characters. It would be even more far out than The Office."

So where exactly do things stand now? "We're talking about it. It's a good idea. We're mulling it over."

None of the other Office costars on hand discussed the idea, but sources tell us NBC would want some involvement of other original Office castmembers. Halpert family vacation, anyone?

(E! and NBC are both part of the NBCUniversal family.)
