Simon Cowell Breaks Off Engagement to Mezghan Husseiny—Is It Permanent?

No one can deny that Simon Cowell's one true love has always been himself. And for the time being, that's how it's going to stay.

The X Factor heavyweight has confirmed that after two years together, he and his makeup artist girlfriend (and much rumored fiancée) are no longer wedding aisle-bound, and that the couple, who last saw each other just before Christmas, are currently on a break.

Though to hear him say it, it's not as if they're totally broken.

While Cowell has a reputation for being a perpetual bachelor who keeps his private life private, his personal life hit the headlines in a big way back in 2010 when he declared Husseiny "the one" on a British talk show and intimated (as did the rock on her ring finger) that they would be taking a trip down the aisle. (He never formally called her his fiancée, though the media made the obvious jump.)

Cut to today, and the music man admits that he regrets the disclosure (not that he ever outright declared it), particularly since a vow swap may no longer be in the cards.

"It is quite a complicated relationship," he told the Daily Mail. "We have had a break from each other, and we are still incredible close.

"I have been pretty good about not talking about my private stuff, but I got caught up in the moment," he said of his declaration of marriage-mindedness. "I don't really know where I am at the moment, and that is why I don't talk about it."

Incredibly close though the duo may be, they're not currently together—though he doesn't appear to be ruling out a reunion in the future.

"I'm vulnerable," he said. "It's not on, it's not off, it's somewhere in the middle. I don't know if I will ever get married, but I am happy."

Whether or not that makes Mezghan happy, well, time will tell.
