American Idol contestants will probably only be truly thankful when Thanksgiving is finally over.

First, this year's runner-up Lauren Alaina entered a lyrical black hole during "The Star-Spangled Banner" before today's Packers-Lions game. And now current Idol champ Scotty McCreery, appearing at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, seems to have forgotten the basics of lip-syncing, to wit: When pretending to sing, pretend to sing.

So when did the trouble start?

The trouble started when McCreery didn't. Specifically, when he didn't begin singing his hit song, "The Trouble With Girls," as the NBC cameras zoomed in for a close-up on the deep-voiced country singer. The "I Love You This Big" hunk probably felt pretty small at that moment, but he jumped in after a few seconds. Better late than never!

It's not that we're shocked about performers miming their hits during the parade. After all, it's cold and windy and the scent of horse manure and marching bands can be distracting. But we expect performers to be able to fake it on cue.

Better luck next time, Scotty!
